The Band
I can’t remember exactly when we started the band. We started out with just the three of us: Sander, Jens and me. Simply because playing guitar and drums with your best friends is so much fun to do.
We did want someone to sing the lyrics to the covers we played though, so that we knew where we were in the song. We decided that Sander and I would take turns singing because we both weren’t really into that. But soon enough we found out that my voice was more suited for lead vocals of the songs we played at that time. That’s actually how I became the lead singer of the band.
As we spent more time playing together, we started to make quite some progress as individual musicians as well as a band. We did some gigs just for fun, and some of our family and friends showed up. Out of these small gigs we got our first real show, at our high school we attended back then.
At that period it really started to hit us, this is what we really wanted to do, we loved it. We wanted to make our band as big as possible. But there were still just three of us and our sound lacked a bass guitar. So we searched for someone who played bass guitar, without any success.
All of a sudden I remembered a guy who was in my math class, his name was Erwin. He shared my taste of music and was a really laid back person. What really matters in a band, as far as I’m concerned, is that you can get along with each other and that you share the taste of a certain type of music. To me, those things were more important than the fact that Erwin never even touched a bass guitar.
So I asked him if he would like to learn how to play a bass guitar, and told him that I would teach him for free. I was hoping he was going to love playing music as much as I did. He hesitated a bit but in the end he did agree. I taught him the basics so he could practice and begin developing himself as a great musician. I quickly realized that Erwin was really into playing the bass and in no time he was good enough to play in the band. That’s how we became complete, he became the fourth Flying Flapjack.
At the beginning of 2009 we stopped practicing new covers. We started writing our own music, which is far more complicated to do but so much more rewarding to us. We all listen to allot of music to get inspired and to figure out what makes the music we love so special to us, hoping to one day create music we can enjoy. We can only hope that other people can enjoy our music as much as we love music. We will carry on writing our music because it made us to what we are today.
